Jane Marter
Labour Candidate, Wealden District Council
Defending the services that matter to you
My name is Jane Marter. I work for the NHS. I have been a registered nurse since 1989 and have been active in the trades union, Unison, for a number of years. I am currently the local branch equalities officer.
I have lived in Pevensey Bay for 14 years, though my connections with the area go back further. I used to visit family as a child when I lived in London.
I am standing as one of your local district candidates for the Labour Party, alongside Robert Slater. He has significant experience of local issues from his service with the Parish council.
I have been out campaigning alongside our parliamentary candidate Michelle Thew. She is the chief executive of a key national animal welfare organisation. She has forged a career running charities and services for children, families and people with disabilities. During our campaigning together, we have enjoyed being able to meet up with many of you at our local events including fairs and coffee mornings.
When out and about campaigning, we have been talking to people and listening to concerns, as well as getting some really positive feedback on the Labour Party policies.
These policies are fundamental to community life.
Labour is backing our NHS and providing care that families need. Without question, this has been a big concern on the local doorstep.
We are backing childcare for 3-4 year olds and guaranteeing after school care. This is clearly a growing issue in the local community.
We are ensuring care for the elderly and vulnerable. In an established community like Pevensey and Westham with senior citizens so well represented, this care is a vital issue and will continue to exercise the concern of the whole community.
Labour will join up care from hospital to home. I know first hand from my work in the NHS for 25 years that a service built around patients is fundamentally important to the wellbeing of the community
Tackling the Cost of Living and giving hope to young people locally will draw attention to employment issues.
Labour will raise the minimum wage to £8 an hour and get our young people back into work, increase the number of apprenticeships and introduce technical degrees.
I also see my role, if elected, as defending the services that matter to you. Bus routes, post offices, fire stations and childrens’ centres have all featured in the conversations that I have had with people on the doorstep. Support for these services and campaigning around these issues will play a big part in my work.
My personal statement to you as a prospective local district councillor includes the following four pledges.
- I will promote Pevensey and Westham and the interests of its residents in a positive way at all times
- I will set up regular surgeries in both communities
- I will listen to you, your concerns and I will value your views
- I will always consider your communications and aim to find a resolution to the issue that you have raised
