News with implications for the future of Pevensey Castle: ‘The Government’s investment of £80m will fund vital conservation work and new presentation and interpretation. As an independent charity, English Heritage will be able to grow with greater freedom’. Statement to members, Dr. Simon Thurley, Chief Executive

Charity Status and £80m for English Heritage
English Heritage is delighted to let our Members know that the Government has confirmed its support for English Heritage to become an independent charity and has awarded £80m towards the safeguarding and improvement of the historic sites in our direct care and the separation of English Heritage into two organisations.

Caring for our Collections
We’re very excited about the news. It will mean more care for those places where significant moments in England’s history happened and help us to bring the story of England to life better than ever before.

The Government’s investment of £80m will fund vital conservation work and new presentation and interpretation. As an independent charity, English Heritage will be able to grow with greater freedom and to raise more money to conserve and present England’s finest historic sites.

We’re glad you’re part of our future and we’re looking forward to sharing with you all the exciting projects we are planning for our sites to make your visits even more interesting and inspiring.

English Heritage and Historic England
Next year, English Heritage will separate into two organisations. The new charity will keep the name English Heritage and will look after the stone circles, the great castles and abbeys, the historic houses and all the other unique sites in its own direct care. As Members you will be able to continue to enjoy access to all our sites.

The plan is that the charity will become fully self-funding over eight years.

A newly named organisation called Historic England will continue our statutory role of giving expert, constructive advice to owners, local authorities and the public, and championing the wider historic environment.

Keeping You Informed
These changes will come into effect in spring 2015. They will not change your membership in any way and you will continue to enjoy free access to all our sites.

We will continue to keep you up to date in your Members’ Magazine and email newsletters. Every penny of your membership goes towards maintaining the properties in our care. With your continued support, we’ll continue to go from strength to strength.
