Pevensey Heritage Walks are about to begin in May. Plans to see that Pevensey continues to promote its unique historical identity are building.
With the successful Wealden Food and Wine Festival held last year in the grounds of Pevensey Castle and the Dickens Evening at Christmas, it was something of a vintage year. This year we welcome back the Dickens Evening, with new guided walks that will enable people to step back in time to various points in history.
Talking to Bay Life, Shirley MacKinnon, who plays a pivotal role in the organisation of a number of local events told us, “I am involved with Pevensey Villages Partnership, which hosted the Dickens evening in December, (next one being worked on now for 5 December).
“I wonder if you would be able to mention the PVP Heritage walks which are starting on 13 May.
“Why not join the Heritage Trail guided walks and step back in time to learn about the history surrounding Pevensey castle and the villages of Pevensey and Westham. You will see St Mary’s Church, the first Church the Normans built, the Court House and Gaol and timber framed houses. You can negotiate the “Squeeze gate” and the walk will take you through fields that were once shoreline and through the castle grounds”.
Shirley reminded us that “2016 sees the 950th anniversary since William the Conqueror arrived and also is 800 years since St Nicolas Church in Pevensey was built”
Shirley added “with all these things to hear about and see on this walk which takes about an hour, you may wish to start and end the walk at one of the four local hostelries, which in themselves add history and character to the area”.
The walks are described as ‘easy going’ and start at 11am at the car park entrance in Pevensey on the East side of the castle.
They will be running every Wednesday from 13 May until 16 September. The field section of the walk is not suitable for wheelchairs but the guide will offer an alternative route. There are facilities at the start and end of the walk.
“The walks are free, but donations are welcome, which will go towards PVP costs and towards local causes”
