Lynn Vincent, a member of the apetito meals on wheels team, has been hailed a heroine after helping rescue an elderly resident from her burning home in East Sussex.
Stephen Kayes, manager for Apetito Services commended Lynn on her actions, saying: “It was an act of bravery that prevented a very likely tragedy.” When delivery driver Lynn Vincent arrived at Mrs. Phillips’ door in Pevensey Bay she was shocked to be faced with thick smoke coming from inside the building. And although Lynn delivers meals regularly to Mrs. Phillips, who is registered under the Older Peoples Mental Health Act, the old lady refused to allow her to enter the building or open the door to her.
Lynn called 999 and after much perseverance finally managed to persuade Mrs. Phillips to leave her home and led the elderly resident to safety.
So much time had elapsed by now that Lynn said the smoke was thick and the pair were struggling to breathe. To add to their problems, flames were now forcing their way through the windows.
Says Kayes: “Everyone has paid tribute to Lynn’s determination in the face of adversity. It’s an example of her dedication and commitment to ensuring her customer’s wellbeing over all else.
“It also truly reflects the importance of apetito’s service as Mrs. Phillips was completely in denial that there was a life-threatening situation developing around her.
“Lynn acted in a brave and hugely commendable manner in very tricky circumstances. We have been told by the fire brigade that Mrs. Phillips would not have survived this incident had she not been persuaded to leave her property – making Lynn a true hero.”
