Local MP, Huw Merriman, makes statement to constituents over Brexit
Huw Merriman, who voted to remain in the Referendum of 2016, has been open and honest with his constituents about his position since the referendum, arguing the case that we must accept the vote of the people and get on with the job of leaving the European Union.
This morning (Friday 16 November), he seems somewhat nonplussed with what to say to his constituents
The Conservative Party appears to have all but imploded as one by one senior figures in the party resign.
In a press conference last night (14 November), the prime minister, Theresa May explained her intention to bat on for Britain, quoting her hero Geoffrey Boycott.
This morning we wait to we whether Michael Grove will announce his resignation from Government. He is widely reported as having turned down the job of Brexit Secretary.
The question about whether Theresa May will survive much longer in her position as the prime minister remains to be seen.
In the House of Commons yesterday (Friday 14 November) what was pointed out was the ‘mathematical impossibility’ of the Conservative Party seeing the House voting in favour of the Theresa May plan.
In the complete chaos of the vortex of the circumstances that prevail in the country this morning, which is being compared in seriousness to the Suez crisis in 1956, all Members of Parliament have to make clear their position to their constituents.
Huw, whose work in the constituency is marked by honest endeavour that sees him with his William Cobbett style rural rides across the length and breath of the constituency every day when he is not sitting in the House, seems to be more than unsure about what to say this morning.
The work of Huw Merriman is a credit to this community, in our view, and this has always been the case. His interest in local matters has seen him offering significant support to Pevensey and Pevensey Bay in many demonstrable ways.
Having said that, his clarity of purpose and position with regard to the state of the Government and his support for Theresa May as the Prime Minister seems to be somewhat clouded in unusual doubt this morning.
What he is saying to constituents is more than ambiguous. Only a cynic would argue that he is waiting to see what happens.
As jokes filter across the the cyberwires that Baldrick in about to be offered the job of Brexit Secretary, the country waits to see if Theresa May will still be in her position as Prime Minister by the end of the day, with many commentators arguing that her position is untenable.
The words “hedge” and “bets” come to mind with what Huw Merriman has said to constituents.
Talking on his Twitter feed to his constituents, late on Thursday 14 November, he adopts a lawyer posture and says “big thank you to negotiators from No10 for their explainer session of the #brexitdeal provided for all 650 MPs from all parties. Media commitments clearly meant many could not attend. Will now carry on reading detail but v similar to the proposals put to us earlier this year”.
We wait to see the outcome of the day and what more Huw Merriman will chose to say to his constituents about Brexit.
