18 April WI Garden Club
On a beautifully warm and sunny April day it was a real pleasure to be able to visit Leonardslee after 9 years of closure to the public.

Renowned for being one of the finest woodland gardens in England with over 10,000 trees, this 240 acre estate is set in a steep sided valley. It boasts rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias, magnolias and bluebells collected from all over the world, together with 10 miles of pathways and seven ponds. This Grade I listed garden was first planted in 1801. The new owner, entrepreneur Penny Streeter, OBE, has overseen the biggest restoration scheme in the UK for nearly 30 years.

Two lakes, home to giant carp, have been dredged to remove the weeds and algae. New benches are being constructed from recycled wood on the estate. With a new entrance and access road, large car park, new reception and ticket office, tea rooms, gift shop and delicatessen this is still very much “work in progress”. However, the new owners are to be congratulated on their endeavour and commitment to restore this venue to its former glory.

It should be noted that Leonardslee is a cash free zone and only accepts payments by card. An outlet at reception and the Stable Block gift shop will accept cash and you will be given a card that can be used throughout Leonardslee. Return your card at the end of the day to receive a cash refund of any remaining money.
