Wealden District Council is supporting this year’s National Recycle Week campaign taking place from 23 September to 29 September.
The theme of the campaign is “Recycling: It’s in our own hands”. Its aim is to inspire everybody to take action and make recycling the new norm.
With environmental concerns rightly very much at the forefront of people’s minds, campaign organisers WRAP (Waste & Resources Action Programme) want to encourage the positive benefits recycling can bring for our planet. It is a call to rinse, crush, squash, sort and separate everything that can be recycled from your general waste. It may be in the bathroom, the kitchen, the office or the great outdoors.
“Residents in Wealden are doing a great job recycling; Just over 50% of their waste each year, which is the highest recycling rate in East Sussex,” said Councillor Bob Standley, Leader of Wealden District Council.
“We would like to thank all of our residents who put in the effort to recycle regularly. However, waste analysis shows that a third of the rubbish in the average Wealden household bin is still recyclable. For National Recycle Week, it would be great to see an even bigger effort to recycle certain items around the house that somehow evade the recycling bin.”
Once collected, the District’s recycling is taken to a depot in Maresfield, near Uckfield, before being transferred to Viridor’s Material Reclamation Facility in Crayford for sorting, and then sent on for making into new products.
Wealden’s top tips for recycling your waste
Remember, recycling just a few more items can make a big difference!
• Recycle more of these items: shampoo and bleach bottles, empty deodorants, soap dispensers, and spray cleaners and washing up liquid bottles,
Just remember, it is best to remove the trigger spray and pump dispenser tops, as these aren’t currently recycled.
• Make sure the following never go in the recycling bin: black plastic bags, food and beverage cartons (tetra paks), garden waste, food waste, textiles and nappies
• Remember that all materials need to be clean, dry and loose when you put them in the recycling bin.
• Textiles and electrical items can be taken to your local Household Waste Recycling Centres and some of the Neighbourhood Recycling Points
