Our annual electoral canvass ensures that everyone who is entitled to vote in Wealden can vote. To do this we have sent Annual Enquiry letters to every household in the District. —Wealden Council 2 October 2019

Here households have not responded to our Enquiry Forms, either online or by return of post, our canvassers will be making a doorstep visit.

“We have a duty to make sure we have the right details on the electoral register for every address,” said Trevor Scott, Returning Officer for Wealden District.

“If you have recently moved to Wealden, or have family members or new friends sharing a property with you, please get in touch. You can contact our Wealden’s electoral registration team at elections@wealden.gov.uk or 01892 602417. They can help make sure you are able to vote in any forthcoming elections or referendums.

“It costs taxpayer’s money to visit individual households. So if you have already received our Annual Enquiry Form, but have not got around to replying, please do so now. We will then be able to use our resources where they are most needed.”

You are still required to respond to the form, even if all the details are correct. We have produced a short video to explain the process .

When registering to vote, you do not need to have your name and address included in the open register. The open register can be accessed by members of the public. You will be asked when registering if you want your details to be publically available. This will not affect your right to vote.

To be eligible to register to vote, a person must be:

- Aged 16 or over (a person may register to vote at 16, but may not vote until they are 18)

- A British or qualifying Commonwealth citizen who has leave to enter and remain in the UK or does not require such leave.

- A citizen of the Republic of Ireland or other European Union (EU) member state. British citizens, Irish citizens and qualifying citizens of Commonwealth countries (including Cyprus and Malta), as well as citizens of other EU member states, can vote in local government elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in England and Wales.

Voting qualification may vary depending on the election. Full details of the Electoral Commission’s research on the electoral registers can be found on the Electoral Commission website, www.electoralcommission.org.uk

If you have any questions, please contact Wealden’s electoral registration team at elections@ wealden.gov.uk or 01892 602417.
