Wealden has climbed 23 places in the national recycling league table thanks to the commitment of local residents.—Waekden District Counil, 21 February 2018

Latest table shows Wealden ranked 62 out of 350 English local authorities

“The latest annual recycling figures, published by Letsrecycle.com show Wealden is ranked 62 out of 350 English local authorities in the national recycling league table, the highest performance of all the recycling authorities in Sussex,” said Councillor Roy Galley, Cabinet member for Waste Management.

“Our verified recycling rate of 51.9% for all household waste puts us among the highest performers in the country. This is thanks to the dedication of local residents who save and sort their recycling. The national average recycling rate for 2016/17 was 44.9%.

“The biggest danger to our recycling performance is contamination when waste and recyclables are put in the wrong containers. Thankfully Wealden residents take the time to think before they throw.”

A wide range of materials are collected at the kerbside by the East Sussex Joint Waste Partnership’s contractor, Kier, including cardboard, paper, shredded paper, food and drink cans, aluminium foil, aerosols, beverage cartons, plastic bottles, pots, tubs, blister packs and plastic film.

“At the beginning of 2016, we encouraged residents through social media to recycle waste from their bathroom, bedrooms and living rooms, as well as their kitchen. It looks like this initiative has paid off,” added Councillor Galley.

“Unfortunately drivers and passengers travelling through our District are not so conscientious, and thoughtless people continue to throw rubbish out of their vehicles in Wealden and in other rural areas. We are looking forward to taking part in the Government’s national anti-littering campaign which will come into force this April with the aim of reducing this ugly blight on our major roads.”

The Government’s proposals include powers to fine the vehicle owners when litter is thrown from a vehicle.

The National 2016/17 Recycling League Table shows the total rate at which household waste is recycled, composted and reused by English local authorities. It is compiled by Letsrecycle.com and can be found here: https://www.letsrecycle.com/councils/league-tables/2016-17-overall-performance/
