Bombshell-500x280

Hedy Lamarr, a Jewish refugee from Hitler’s Austria, first gained notoriety in 1933 by appearing nude in steamy German flick, Ecstasy. In 1937, she was discovered by Louis B. Mayer in Paris and signed to MGM, returning to Hollywood, he began to promote her as the “world’s most beautiful woman in the world”.—Towner Art Gallery

Parable of modern sexual politics and assumptions about science

While starring opposite Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, James Stewart and William Powell, Hedy toyed with inventing in her spare time. The result, discovered during WWII, was a radio system we now use as the basis for bluetooth and wifi. Long overdue for rediscovery, Hedy’s story has to be seen to be believed.

“Alexandra Dean’s excellent and important documentary about her is very instructive – a parable of modern sexual politics and assumptions about science.” – The Guardian

Women in Film
In the centenary year of the 1918 suffrage act, celebrating women’s voices has never been more important. With this in mind, we present a season dedicated entirely to women in film. All the films in this season are directed or co-directed by women, and most are female-focused in their narrative.
