The Pevensey Bay Sea Defence scheme has received a Gold National Site Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme for a third consecutive year.—Dredging news online, 11 May 2016

Dredging news online, the unique publication for all those involved in the international dredging industry, ports and harbours, and marine contracting breaks the news that The Pevensey Bay Sea Defence scheme has won another award

As the news broke, that the the scheme had won a third Gold National Site Award, Pevensey Coastal Defence commented, “for the third year running, the Pevensey Bay Sea Defences project has been given a Considerate Constructors Gold Award. According to scheme organisers, this makes the site the most decorated in the scheme’s history”.

Dredging news online (11 May) says, “Pevensey Bay Sea Defences is a 25-year project on the East Sussex coast to improve and maintain 9km of shingle embankment sea defence between Eastbourne and Bexhill-on-Sea.

“The defences protect a 50km² area that includes more than 10,000 properties, caravan parks and road and rail infrastructure which could be flooded if the defences are ever breached.

“The work is being carried out by Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd, a joint venture between Boskalis Westminster, Balfour Beatty, and Mackley. The contract is the UK’s first Public Private Partnership (PPP) flood defence scheme, and a HM Treasury Pathfinder Project.

“The Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) was founded in 1997 by the construction industry to improve its image. Construction sites, companies and suppliers voluntarily register with the Scheme and agree to abide by its Code of Considerate Practice which focuses on three main categories: the general public, the workforce and the environment.

Pevensey Coastal Defence Limited
The Pevensey Bay Sea Defence scheme is unique. It was the first sea defence project anywhere in the world to be funded as a Public Private Partnership (PPP/PFI). In committing to a 25 year contract, Pevensey’s residents and environment are guaranteed a consistent standard of defence until at least 2025. This approach to beach maintenance has allowed the Environment Agency and Pevensey Coastal Defence Ltd to develop and advance ‘best practice’ in provision of sea defence services.
