Eastbourne Works Shortlisted for ICE Award

Pevensey Coastal Defence Limited’s recent beach recharge works on Eastbourne’s seafront has been shortlisted for a prestigious 2012 Engineering Excellence Award.

The Engineering Excellence Awards showcase the best civil engineering projects in the region in any given year, with the judges rewarding projects that reflect aspects of the ICE’s Global Vision of: ‘Civil Engineers at the heart of society, delivering sustainable development through knowledge, skills and professional expertise’.

The overall winner last year, 2011, holder of ‘the Thomas Brassey Award’ in 2011 was the Kent and East Sussex Branch of ICE.

Canterbury Growth Scheme
This £11.5 million project has increased sewerage network capacity in Canterbury and reduced the risk of flooding and pollution as the city continues to grow. The original proposals, to construct over 4km of new sewers, were replaced with a less disruptive and more cost effective approach which minimised the impact of the works on local communities, heritage and the environment. The new solution consisted of the construction of an underground storm tank at Kingsmead Road, a new pumping station to transfer storm flows from the sewers at Vauxhall Road through a new pumping main to Canterbury Water Treatment Works, and into a new above ground storm tank. This much needed infrastructure was delivered significantly under budget.

The Eastbourne works, managed by PCDL is one of sixteen projects vying for five awards . Winners are to be announced in a ceremony at Leeds Castle in June.
