A number of volunteers including Sussex Police’s Chief Constable Giles York QPM, and Chief Superintendent Nev Kemp, divisional commander for Brighton and Hove helped to install the Snowdogs by the Sea trail in Brighton on Thursday 22 September. The giant sculptures were delivered to locations across the city by another Snowdog sponsor, Sussex Transport, who worked through the night to get the unusual cargo to their new homes safely.—Sussex Police, 23 September 2016

Sussex Police is proudly sponsoring ‘Bobby’ the Snowdog to promote awareness of equality and diversity in policing. Chief Constable Giles York said: “Bobby will champion our commitment to encouraging people from a diverse range of social groups and backgrounds, more representative of the community we police, to work or volunteer for us.”

He continued: “I’m delighted to help with the installation of the Snowdog project, helping to raise awareness of equality and diversity in policing, but also raise funds for the Martlets Hospice in Hove which provides great care for people living through terminal illness.”

Snowdogs by the Sea, an extraordinary public art trail, will hit the streets of Brighton & Hove for 9 weeks in September 2016 (24 Sept – 27 Nov). The magical sculpture trail will feature around 44 giant Snowdogs, inspired by the much-loved animated short film, The Snowman™ and The Snowdog, based on the book by Raymond Briggs. Each Snowdog will be individually decorated by different artists and generously sponsored by local businesses. The giant Snowdogs will be joined by a pack of Snowdog puppy sculptures designed by local school children.

The trail is being organised by local charity, Martlets Hospice, in conjunction with Wild in Art, one of the UK’s leading creative producers of public art events. Artists will be commissioned to design each of the Snowdogs, ensuring a unique identity for each one. The idea follows in the footsteps of similar projects run by Wild in Art in other cities such as The Big Hoot in Birmingham and Gromit Unleashed in Bristol. At the end of the event each Snowdog will be auctioned to raise funds for the hospice. Snowdogs by the Sea is expected to raise significant funds for the hospice and attract tens of thousands of visitors to Brighton and Hove in the autumn.

Imelda Glackin, Martlets Hospice CEO said: “We have been overwhelmed by the support of local businesses, artists, community groups and schools who have all come together to enable us to create this unique trail. We know that the people of Brighton and Hove will get behind it, and we expect it to attract thousands of tourists to the city too. What is wonderful about this project is that as well as being a brilliant, free event, which everyone can enjoy, it will also raise vital funds for Martlets so that we can support and care for more people who need hospice care.”

The 24 snow puppies, designed by local school children, are all ready and waiting to join the main trail and will be on show at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Hove Museum and the Booth Museum of Natural History, Hove Library and Jubilee library throughout the event.
