Students on the Prince’s Trust Team Programme in Eastbourne redecorate Eastbourne Mencap’s sensory room as part of their community project—Sussex Downs College, 14 March 2017

The Prince’s Trust 12-week re-engagement programme offered through Sussex Downs College, Eastbourne, focuses on personal development and teamwork, preparing 16- 25-year-olds for further education or the workplace.

The current student cohort held fundraising activities prior to starting the community project, raising money for the paint, lights, cushions, sensory objects and decorations. The team organised a carwash, a cake sale, busking in Eastbourne’s town centre and bag packing in Marks & Spencer.

The team spent five days in February redecorating the sensory room at Eastbourne Mencap and it was unveiled to Patrons and staff on 21st February.

“The team worked extremely hard on their community project,” says Scott Backler, Assistant Team Leader of the Prince’s Trust in Eastbourne. “We are so grateful to local companies for their support, including Marks and Spencer in Eastbourne, Jocelyn’s Café, and Oh My Goodness health food and vegan store.”

The Community Project is just part of the 12-week Team Programme. Activities include a five-day residential, fundraising, community project, a two-week work placement, Community challenge, CV advice and help with Interview techniques. They are now recruiting for the next team intake to start on 2nd May 2017. For more information, contact Team Leader Lucinda Miedema on lucinda.miedema@sussexdowns.ac.uk.
