A series of beautiful portraits from the Monday Lunch Club at the Ethel Wood Centre in Pevensey Bay is to front a new campaign to support the work of organisers
The commission by talented local photojournalist, Steve Malone, takes the line “Tell Us Why You Do Like Mondays” as the theme for the photoshoot. He throws the line at happy senior citizens enjoying the spirit of the Monday Lunch Club at the Ethel Wood Centre. In the process, he captures their faces lighting up as they express their joy at the delights of the day.
The portraits are to feature on his new web platform, ‘Untold Images’, which launches in February
The twelve portraits are to front a new campaign to promote the Monday Lunch Club at the Ethel Wood Centre and will be seen in print and online in a number of news outlets across East Sussex. The campaign is also titled “Tell Us Why You Do Like Mondays”. The portraits will also feature as an exhibition at the Ethel Wood Centre in Spring this year, to promote the values of the Monday Lunch Club.
Talking about the photoshoot which took place at the centre on Monday 27 January 2020, Chris Wood, one of the organisers of the Monday Lunch Club said “we knew that we needed something to promote the Monday Lunch Club and this is exactly what we need”.
The portrait commission is part of a campaign to promote voluntary work in Pevensey Bay. At the exhibition of the portraits, large prints will be available to buy, priced £45:00,. The proceeds will all be donated to the Monday Lunch Club and the work of Chris Wood and her team of volunteers to support their endeavours.
Simon Montgomery, editor of the Pevensey Bay Journal, talking about the work of Steve Malone, said “the way in which Steve is raising the profile of Pevensey Bay with his commissioned work is noteworthy, we are so lucky to have someone of this calibre working with our community:
He added, “what Steve does is to tell the story with each of his images, which really lives up to his web platform title, ‘Untold Images”. This is both a rare and unique talent and the way in which he finds the story in each image is beautifully told”.
The work of Steve Malone has been seen locally on World Car Free Day in Eastbourne with his picture “The Girl with the Banner” and nationally with his picture “Tunnel Joggers in Greenwich”.
Steve has been commissioned to document local VE75Day celebrations in the community between 8-10 May 2020 which will tell the story of “The day the guns fell silent in Europe.”
An exhibition of his work, “Surprised by Joy, Ethel and Heather,” as well as featuring at the local community centre, is also to appear in the Pevensey Bay Journal, edition 32, published on Saturday 14 March.
