“St. Nicolas Church, Pevensey which is celebrating its 800th anniversary this year has been awarded a £1,785 grant under Wealden’s Community Grant Programme for 2016/17. This is a one off grant for community projects within Wealden—deputy church warden, George Stephens, 10 March 2016

The award has been made in recognition of, and to contribute towards the cost of a series of several high profile Concerts at the church being held this summer.

They aim to attract a wide cross-section of the community to the church. The programme includes Sussex Brass on St, George’s Day,(23rd April) as well as chamber and choral music by Canterbury Cathedral Boys Choir, Hailsham Choral Society, and The King’s Singers – one of only two concerts of theirs in the country this year. Jazz enthusiasts can enjoy a programme by The Pasadena Roof Orchestra ‘Hot Five’. Additionally there are historical talks including one on the 950th anniversary of the landing of William the Conqueror at Pevensey on 14th October.

Bay Life understands that we are in for a wow with the Pasadena Roof Orchestra ‘Hot Five’: Advance information includes details of the sets and confirmation that the group will include Pasadena Roof Orchestra founder, John Arthy!!!

The band will perform two 50 minute sets. Five ‘PRO’ members including the founder, John Arthy, play a typical ‘PRO’ jazz programme of ‘PRO’ music from the 1920’s and ‘30’s. Refreshments will be available at the interval.

George Stephens’ Deputy Churchwarden , who has arranged the events programme says, “It is important that the church is seen as a venue for social activities as well as for that which it has been used continuously as a place of worship for 800 years. Having the support of Wealden is a huge encouragement and a boost towards meeting our aim to appeal as many local people as possible, whilst contributing to our church restoration fund, for which we recently received a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.’

The events programme is additionally supported by 1066 Country, Gaby Hardwicke, BPE Communications, Starshine Music, Visick Cars, Carr Taylor Wines, Pevensey Town Trust, & Priory Court Hotel.

Details for the full Events programme and tickets for all events are available from , or online through http://www.wegottickets.com/event/352102.
