Gas distribution company SGN will shortly be starting work to upgrade the local gas supply network in Coast Road, Pevensey Bay.—SGN, 13 October 2016, media release to community

As part of a £624,000 project to ensure a continued safe and reliable gas supply to the local community, the existing metal gas mains and services need to be replaced with modern plastic pipe.

The essential work forms part of an ongoing gas mains replacement programme developed with the Health and Safety Executive. Following discussions with East Sussex County Council, our project will start on Tuesday 1 November and last approximately six weeks.

We have co-ordinated our project with East Sussex Highways’ work to repair the road surface in Coast Road. Once we’ve upgraded our pipes in Coast Road, East Sussex Highways will complete its road surface repairs.

To ensure everyone’s safety, Coast Road will be closed in five phases over nine weeks. Pedestrian access will be maintained along Coast Road at all times. A signed diversion will be in place for through traffic during all five phases. Motorists will be diverted via the A259 Wallsend Road, A259 High Street and Sluice Lane before rejoining Coast Road at Normans Bay.

We are holding a drop-in session for the local community on Wednesday 19 October. Our project team, along with representatives from East Sussex Highways, will be at Ethel Wood Community Centre between 4.30pm and 8pm. During that time, local residents will be able to hear more details about the work and speak to the project teams about any specific concerns they may have.

SGN Construction Manager Steve Colvin said: “We’ve worked closely with East Sussex Highways in planning this project. By working together, we’re able to minimise disruption to the community.

“We’re committed to doing everything we can to reduce inconvenience caused by our essential work. We’re acutely aware that the diversion route along the unadopted Coast Road is narrow in places, so we’ll have “safety spotters” guiding traffic through this section of road from 7am until 7pm. Our “safety spotters” will help any emergency service vehicles travel safely past our work area. We’ve also worked with East Sussex Highways to carry out repairs to the road surface along the diversion route before our project begins.

“I’d encourage local residents to visit our drop-in session on Wednesday 19 October to learn more about our work. We’ll also have maps and leaflets available, explaining our project in more detail. We’ll also issue a further information leaflet to all local residents next week with full phase information. Once our project begins, please do call us or speak to our engineers on site at any time if you’ve got any questions as work progresses.”

For any enquiries about our gas network upgrade, please call 01444 240 700 during office hours (8am to 4pm) or on 0800 912 1700 outside these times. For further information about East Sussex Highways work, please visit eastsussexhighways.com.
