Towner Film: Screen Classics
September sees the launch of a new partnership with the University of Sussex. Every month we will be inviting an academic from the University’s Film Studies department to introduce a film of their choice. On 16 September, for the first film in this partnership, we present one of Joan Crawford’s very best: Mildred Pierce, the only film for which she ever won an Oscar. The film will be introduced by Dr Michael Lawrence, head of the department.
—Towner Film, 30 August 2018
Joan Crawford stars in an Oscar-winning performance as a housewife accused of murder in Mildred Pierce. Blending both the women’s picture and film noir genres, the film is that rare beast which centres the middle-aged woman and spends more time on her relationship with her daughters than on her love life. It marked a turning point in Crawford’s career as she chose to move towards roles that reflected her maturing womanhood, casting her in an entirely new light to audiences.
Introduced by Dr Michael Lawrence, head of Film Studies at the University of Sussex
