FEATURE : LOST AND FOUND: The story of Peter Sellers and the Goons in Pevensey Bay

JUST BACK from a 20 mile run yesterday (Sunday 13 October), the curiously named ‘The Jog Shop Jog’, steeped in Sussex myth, Running Man Phil Taylor is as bright as a button serving customers in the Ocean Bakery and Restaurant today, as he prepares for the next big one, the Washington Marine Corps Marathon on 27 October.

With over 15 marathons under his belt, Phil grins as he explains that he ‘doesn’t want to peak’ and is planning just 7/8 mile runs about three days a week as he gets into gear ready to join 30,000 runners in the USA capital in just 12 days time.

As he prepares to leave on the 24th, the sponsorship forms, always on view in the restaurant, continue to fill, as customers sign up, happy to help him on his way with pledges of support.

For as long as he can remember, he has been running for the Dystonia Society, in support of local friend Nikki, whose story we will be telling in Running Man in the coming weeks.

For now, with just days to go until he decamps for the Washington Marathon, we are encouraging everyone to call in at the Ocean Bakery and Restaurant, 7 Eastbourne Road in Pevensey Bay, to wish Phil well and sign up with some pennies for this worthy cause.

Four sponsorship forms already completed and another new sheet going up in the Bakery this afternoon as we spoke, with yet more people with their pens out.

‘Jog Shop Jog’ escapades over track and field and Sussex stories about races gone by? Local legend, Running Man Phil Taylor, has a chapter all of his own.
