A Pevensey local, The Royal Oak and Castle Inn, is offering its customers something new by linking up with the Pub Is The Hub, East Sussex County and Wealden District Council to launch an innovative book exchange promotion.

“The book exchange has been a great success with people borrowing the books or picking up the same book each time they come in until they’ve finished,” said Debby Fitton, Landlord at The Royal Oak and Castle. “But it’s only one of the things we are working with Pub Is The Hub on – our restaurant hosts a supper club, providing a regular space for people with carers to enjoy a relaxing night of great food and a break. We’ve also started selling provisions – our own sausages and bacon as well as the essentials that people run out of like milk and veg to save them having to trek out of town. It’s all about cementing The Royal Oak and Castle as the hub of the community.”

The Pub is The Hub scheme is delivered in partnership between Wealden District Council with East Sussex County Council and the Pub is The Hub organisation. It aims to support rural public houses by finding new ways of attracting customers by delivering or hosting services that the local community needs. This strengthens the role of the pub as the centre of rural communities. So far the partnership is working closely with eight pubs across Wealden district.

For more information on the Pub is the Hub scheme please contact Zoe Clarke, Community & Regeneration Officer by email on zoe.clarke@wealden.gov.uk or phone on 01323 443266

Pub is the Hub is a not-for-profit organisation that encourage licensees, communities, pub owners, breweries, local authorities and the private sector to work together to match community needs with additional services which can be provided by the local pub. Formed over 10 years ago they have completed over 500 schemes nationwide.
