New Priest in Charge at St. Nicolas church to write for the Journal

In a series of communications with St. Nicolas church, Pevensey,  it has been agreed that new priest in Charge at St. Nicolas church Pevenesy is to write for the Journal, the independent newspaper based in Pevensey Bay.

Talking to Bay Life today (23 March), Father Tony Windross said that he was ‘happy to have a go’.

In response, editor of Bay Life, Simon Montgomery said, “have read some of your work and clearly, gladly, we now have an accomplished writer in our midst.

“Think we can reach a significant number of local people for you and St. Nicolas church. You are very welcome indeed”.

For eight centuries St Nicolas Church has stood at the centre of Pevensey. The church is the oldest building still in use here for its original purpose.

On his appoitment as interim vicar Tony Widross commented “I was born in Margate, but grew up in Eastbourne. After leaving school I read economics and geography at Cambridge – and whilst there met and married Pat.

“We moved to Birmingham to study on the post-graduate certificate of education course – and I then taught in Eastbourne for 24 years, during which time our family steadily grew, with the arrival of four sons: Peter, David, Andrew and Paul.

“I began ordination training in 1990, and was fortunate to have Nicholas Reade as my training incumbent, and Tony Christian as my local tutor.

“I was ordained in 1993, and was based at St Mary’s Eastbourne as a non-stipendiary minister, before moving in 1997 to East Grinstead as a full-time curate.

“We moved to Sheringham in North Norfolk, where I was the vicar for nine years, before going in 2008 to Hythe in Kent, where I was vicar for six years.

“Wanting a fresh challenge, we then experienced rural ministry in Cornwall, where I’ve had responsibility for 8 churches over the last three years, combining this with being rural dean.

“Pat and I are very excited about this new adventure. We love the area, and look forward to getting to know the parish and people of Pevensey.”

The work of Tony Windross as a writer and author is marked.

The Thoughtful Guide to Faith (2003) received interesting reviews. John Shelby “Jack” Spong, a retired American bishop of the Episcopal Church and a liberal Christian theologian, said “this book will escape the walls of the church and be debated everywhere”.
