Set to a backdrop including Brighton’s thriving Mod scene, rock opera Quadrophenia was released as a double album in 1973 by English rock band The Who to critical acclaim and subsequently revived for a film version. Now all ages can experience Quadrophenia – the album, LIVE! faithfully recreated on the stage of Eastbourne’s Devonshire Park Theatre, for one-night only on 17 November.
This storming show pays tribute to the emotive music of The Who, the biggest-selling and most powerful band in the world for decades known for hits like My Generation, Won’t Get Fooled Again and I Can See for Miles. Produced specifically for the stage and appealing to all generations, with full-on sound effects as used on the original Quadrophenia album and state-of-the-art lighting to enhance the performance, it has received standing ovations from the very first performance!
The Goldhawks, a world-class, eight-piece band, fronted by Doug Freeman who is widely regarded as the world’s greatest ever live tribute to Roger Daltrey, faithfully recreates the power, tension and visceral emotion of the music backed by a large screen showing bespoke film, archive footage and visual effects throughout the show.
Released over 40 years ago in October 1973, The Who’s second rock opera Quadrophenia (following the success of Tommy) was Pete Townshend’s homage to a pivotal moment in British youth culture. The album tells the story of Jimmy, a Mod, by chronicling his dissatisfaction with life, work, love, home, and family life. It served as an ode to teenage angst and counterculture rebellion, as well as a criticism of the British class, economic and educational systems but you don’t need to be clued up on the history of the Mods and Rockers to enjoy this show because at its core, Quadrophenia, which peaked at No. 2 on the UK and USA charts, is just about teenage confusion, conflict and frustration.
