The Forest Garden is about local people growing food in a sustainable way that allows wildlife to flourish too. It was created on an old allotment site that had been unmanaged for many years. Our keen volunteers have created clearings for beehives, planted many fruit and nut trees, created a herb garden, built a wildlife pond, and run community workshops on site.
Our Forest Garden started up in the spring of 2016. We have a number of beehives on site each containing a swarm of bees collected by our consultant beekeeper Jennifer Moore. Each hive has been lovingly tended by her. Whenever there is a surplus of honey to harvest we will make it available locally, to help fund our project.
The Forest Garden follows sustainable principles. It is on a site of unmanaged land and our keen team of volunteers have been busy clearing away areas of dead undergrowth and pollarding many overgrown trees and shrubs. Pathways and clearings were made to house the hives. The flora and fauna on the site is abundant and provides good foraging for the bees.
Parts of the site used to be allotments and some mature apple trees have survived. We have recently planted a variety of fruit trees including apple, plum, medlar and walnut, which are thriving.
We are always on the look out for new volunteers
We have volunteer work sessions, weather permitting, on Tuesday and Thursday mornings each week and on the 4th Saturday morning of each month.
