Pevensey Food and Wine Festival
We have got form when it comes to festivals. In 1908, the Pevensey Pageant saw 25,000 people arriving in the village, many by train. One hundred years later, the Pevensey Food and Wine Festival arrives with a platform at the place described by historian Michael Wood, as where the Great British story began. Welcome to the festival that will help return Pevensey to its rightful place on the history map.
Credit to all the staff at Wealden Council and English Heritage who together have been involved in the planning and development of the First Pevensey Food and Wine Festival, to be held at Pevensey Castle on the last weekend in August 30-31.
We are looking at the setting that has a unique place in The Great British Story: A People’s History. The castle, with its two thousand year story, will play host to over 30 local food stalls, live music all weekend, food from snacks to main meals, in a location, as the organisers describe it ‘just minutes to the beach’.
The local economy is about to get a kickstart. If it is to be a yearly event, the boost to the local economy could be of significance.
The Wealden Council media release this morning (Monday 21 July) explains ‘that festivals are proving especially popular in the South East of England, as we benefit from good weather and home to many excellent food and drink producers. This will be ideal time of the year to highlight the very best of Sussex, with not only food & wine produce, but also artisan goods, local crafts and culture’.
‘The festival will take place in the magnificent grounds of Pevensey Castle, courtesy of English Heritage. Pevensey. The castle itself is in a beautiful setting in the historic village of Pevensey and very close to the coast at Pevensey Bay. The castle will be open during the festival weekend and more information can be found here’.
‘Exhibitor stands will be set around the castle walls, inside the entrance to the castle itself. There will be an entertainment tent with live music, whilst street entertainers work their magic with children, plus storytelling and other fun events. Visitors can join free guided walks around the Castle to learn more of its history’.
‘The event starts at 11am to 6pm on both days in the main area and the entertainment will finish at 7.30pm on each of the days’.
‘The aim of the festival is to promote local produce and businesses in the area and priority will be given to those who meet those requirements’.
