Pevensey Cricket Club held a highly successful Open Day at their Wallsend Road ground on Saturday (12 July), writes Simon Owen
The club was selected to be part of an England Cricket Board campaign to increase participation in recreational sport and decided to coincide the event with their junior section end of season barbecue party.
The club started a colts section three years ago and has seen the number of junior members growing each season with more than 60 boys and girls involved this year.
The Open Day was sponsored by Waitrose and their Eastbourne store provided £100 worth of food and drinks to support the event.
The day began with Kwik Cricket matches followed by a barbecue and traditional Summer Fayre activities. Particularly popular with the young players were chances to show off their throwing arms smashing crockery with cricket balls and soaking their coach with wet sponges. There was also a test of strength with a tug of war contest.
More than 100 people enjoyed the fun and over £500 was raised towards the cost of new equipment with one lucky raffle winner taking home a wheelbarrow full of donated prizes.
A great day for the club was rounded off with East Sussex Cricket League victories for both the first and second senior sides. Club Chairman Simon Owen, who bagged six wickets for the club first eleven in the afternoon, said “The Open Day was a big success. We are grateful to Waitrose for their sponsorship of the event and are already making plans for further growth in the club membership next year.”
The junior section will continue to benefit significantly from the work of Brighton University’s BSc Sport Coaching students who will lead training sessions at the Denton Road sports centre in the winter.
