An event of epic significance is about to take place as Olympic torchbearers blaze a trail through Pevensey and Pevensey Bay. We are about to witness the world symbol of sporting participation weaving its way on the final stages of its journey to London and the start the 2012 Games.
People get ready. Martin Wolf, Jill Doddington, Vicki Lamberton, Derek Mepham, Sara Baaken and Tristan Stephens are about to do us proud as the world stage provided by the Olympics comes full circle to the site of the Norman Conquest on its historic journey all the way from ancient Greece to the Boyle Tapestry of the Opening Ceremony.
The Olympic Torch Relay will be visiting Wealden on Tuesday 17 July in Crowborough and Pevensey. To help things run smoothly, here a few things to consider, courtesy of the Wealden Council newsroom, before you set off to watch this historic event, .
Our first glimpse of the action will be the ‘Activation Convoy’ which consists of sponsors’ vehicles. These vehicles will interact with the crowd and may even give out a few free goodies!
Approximately 10 minutes later the Torch Convoy including the runners who will be carrying the Olympic Torch will arrive.
Here are details of the route which the Torchbearers will follow as they pass through Crowborough and Pevensey before returning to the vehicles in Convoy Mode to travel to their next destination. Please note, the timings provided below are to watch the Torchbearers – please arrive in plenty of time to view the Activation Convoy that travels around 10 minutes ahead.
Timings
Please be aware that the timings for the arrival of the Torch in our District are subject to change. We will do our best to communicate any changes to timings on the website, Facebook and Twitter sites.
Crowborough
Arrival at 12.09 at Steel Cross on Green Lane, reaching Beacon Community College for lunch stop at about 12.25. The Torch Relay will leave Beacon Community College at approximately 13.30, reaching the High Street at 13.35 and will get back into Convoy Mode at Twyfords, opposite the Blue Anchor pub on the A26 at around 13.51. The Torch Convoy then makes its way to Lewes and Eastbourne before returning to Wealden in Pevensey.
Pevensey
Arrival at 16.41 at Castle Drive on the A259 Eastbourne Road. The convoy will then travel against the normal traffic direction into the High Street and then on to Wallsend Road and over the railway line after which it will change back into Convoy Mode and make its way to Bexhill on Sea.
If you would like to see the route information on a map, the Olympic Torch Relay Route Map (external link) allows you to search for a map of the Torch either by town or by date.
Travel
During the Torch Relay there will be some traffic disruption and delays. There will be some rolling road closures put in place very close to the time at which the Torch Convoy enters both Crowborough and Pevensey, to allow it to pass safely. There will be suspended street parking in place in both areas on the day. Please take note of the yellow signage that will be put up in advance of the event in both areas.
Parking
Demand for parking may be high. Please arrive in good time. We strongly advise walking, cycling or using public transport to make sure you don’t miss this momentous event.
Crowborough
The field in front of the leisure centre (this will be sign posted) will be available for parking, as will the Leisure Centre car park and the various other parking areas in the town, as normal. Please be parked and in place to view the Torch Relay well in advance to avoid missing out.
Please note: Crowborough Rugby Club will be used for school coaches and steward cars ONLY. No other vehicles will be permitted to park here.
Pevensey
Sea Road car park will be available for parking and stewards will be on hand to ensure vehicles park space efficiently. There is also parking available in the small car park on North road and at Castle Road car park in Pevensey village.
Please note: On-street parking and parking bays along the route in both Pevensey and Crowborough will NOT be available to park in. This is to give people a clear view and to allow the Torch Relay to pass safely.
Facilities for disabled people
Crowborough
We would recommend that any wheelchair users view the Torch Relay from the High Street area which is the flattest part of the route. Please use disabled bays as normal for parking.
Pevensey
The route in Pevensey is predominantly flat, but the most suitable area for wheelchair users would be the High Street where pavements are a little wider and parking in the laybys will have been suspended, allowing for a clearer view of the convoy.
Toilets
The following businesses are part of the Community Toilet scheme in Crowborough:
The Cross Public House, Crowborough Cross, TN6 1AH
Trendy Little Angels, 4 The Broadway, TN6 1DF
Waitrose, Croft Road, TN6 1DL
Wealden District Council Offices, Pine Grove, TN6 1DH
Crowborough Town Council, Town Council Offices, The Broadway, TN6 1DA
There are public toilets located at Sea Road car park in Pevensey and there will also be some portaloos in place along the route in both Crowborough and Pevensey.
Safety
There will be a number of volunteer stewards in hi-visibility vests who will be lining the route to help the event run smoothly.
Please do not run along side the convoy and try to keep on the pavements as much as possible before and during the event.
We are expecting over 2000 school children en route, the majority along Green Lane and near Chapel Green – please be aware of this when planning / travelling to your destination.
