Westham Community News

Let us hope we get a strong plan for our beloved pond

Good morning just a gentle reminder that Westham Parish Councils pond management plan sub committee have finally published their pond management plan it is online on the website .

It was going to be discussed at last Monday’s meeting however it was different as the plan took so long to go online that some of the Parish Councillors agreed with the chairman to give the public an extra two weeks to read it and send in their questions on it to the clerk of Westham Parish Council .

After reading the plan before the meeting questions arose however we were unable to question the three people on the pond committee over the plan in great detail as only the two Councillors from the subcommittee were there as unfortunately the other member of this sub committee left the meeting rather abruptly before anyone could ask questions to them which was a great shame .

A hard copy of this plan will be made available for people who cannot view it online to read it in Vines Flowers from this Friday please pass this on to anyone you know in our parish that can’t use or does not have a computer .

The good news is planting will take place which will be lovely as long as the pond does not dry out again.

The banks are structured correctly for marginal planting and sloped correctly for wildlife etc the bad news is the inlet pipe search is not on it, nor is the desilting of the rest of the pond which potentially means the pond will be put at risk again if we have a hot period.

The pond will not have a chance to fill to its potential maximum during wet periods April showers etc if half is still silted up and the inlet has not been found or checked for blockages to make sure the spring can flow to its max .

If the basic maintenance is not carried out i.e find the inlet check it, check the outlet before anything is carried out, we could be back in the same mess again this summer, fingers crossed we are not and let’s hope we get a strong plan for our beloved pond .

Please read the plan and comment to the clerk of Westham Parish Council .
