SCENES OF PEVENSEY : CHRISTINE RACHER : ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
A new artwork looks set to become the star of the show this Saturday, 22 November.
The artwork by fast selling local artist, Christine Racher, is to go on show at an Art Exhibition at St. Wilfrid’s Hall, Pevensey Bay.
Both her previous artworks of the locality, one of Pevensey Bay and one of Westham are now in the hands of private collectors. The new painting is expected to generate further interest in her work.
Talking to Bay Life today (Wednesday 19 November), unassuming Christine, who has no art training background, seemed slightly taken aback at the interest in her work, which has sold not just locally but as far afield as Leeds.
Sister, Val, also an artist, speaking on her behalf, explained that a gallery owner, who had studied her work recently, commented that it was unusual for an untrained artist to have developed their own style so quickly and to such a mature level.
The new work titled ‘Scenes of Pevensey’ features Pevensey Castle, The Royal Oak & Castle Inn, Priory Court, St Nicolas Church, Court House Museum & Gaol & The Smugglers in what has become her original ”picaresque style’ in which buildings and local features appear to dance in a kind of harmonious cacophony.
Comparisons have been made to the work of ‘native artist’ Alfred Wallis in Cornwall, whose work went on to become one of the foundations of the ‘St. Ives School’.
Christine, disarmingly explains that (until recently), she had never heard of Alfred Wallis.
Offering Bay Life a preview of the work, she confirmed that the work will form part of the exhibition which opens at 10:30am on Saturday..
The local artist is celebrating the success of her work with a newly commissioned web platform that is launched on December 6.
As well as previewing new work, the platform will feature work by sister Val and information through an email newsletter that will detail how to buy postcard packs of her work produced by a specialist company in London.
