Network Rail and Govia Thameslink Railway are rescheduling the engineering works between Brighton and Lewes on June 1 so fans can cheer on England women in their final friendly match before the World Cup.
Buses would have replaced trains on Saturday, 1 June, so Network Rail and GTR have decided to change our works schedule to accommodate the 10,000 fans expected to travel by train for England’s friendly fixture against New Zealand at Brighton’s Amex Stadium in Falmer.
John Halsall, managing director of Network Rail South East, said: “We’ll be cheering on England at this summer’s World Cup and we know how important this friendly fixture is to their preparation.
“That’s why we’ve taken the decision to reschedule the works so fans can travel to support the Lionesses on trains rather than buses.
“We will update passengers as soon as we have an alternative date for the work to be completed.”
The work will be rescheduled to another date set to be confirmed. However, the work planned for Sunday, 2 June, will continue as advertised with a rail replacement bus service in place for passengers.
Keith Jipps, Infrastructure Director for Govia Thameslink Railway, added: “We wish England the best of luck. By working with Network Rail to postpone this work, fans will have a much easier and more comfortable journey.”
The FA’s Head of Transport, Tom Legg, said: “We’re delighted with the fantastic support we’ve received from Network Rail and GTR which means fans can enjoy the easiest and most comfortable journey possible.
“It guarantees England will get the support they need and deserve ahead of this summer’s World Cup.”
Network Rail and GTR moved engineering work last month to accommodate Brighton & Hove Albion FC’s fans on their trip to Wembley for the FA Cup semi-final.
George Hunt, Brighton football club’s transport manager, added: “We’re delighted with Network Rail’s help again for the England match after they moved engineering work for our FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
“It’s so reassuring to have such a good relationship and that Network Rail are putting passengers first again.”
