Join the Alliance to make Wealden dementia friendly. Wealden District Council is inviting residents, organisations and businesses to support the launch of the Wealden Dementia Action Alliance on Thursday 19 May at Hailsham Civic Community Hall from 1-3pm—Wealden District Council, 4 May 2016

The event, taking place during Dementia Awareness Week 16 to 20 May, will feature expert speakers and information stalls where attendees will learn about what services are available in Wealden, and find out how they can get involved in supporting those who live with dementia every day.

“Living with dementia affect the lives of those diagnosed and those who care for them,” said Councillor Claire Dowling, Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Community Safety. “As communities we must do everything we can to support and improve the quality of life for those affected. By working with the Wealden Dementia Alliance to make our towns and villages Dementia Friendly we can show and provide support for the residents and their carers who have to cope with dementia every day. I urge anyone interested to find out how they can help and tell their friends and relatives. The more people involved the better.”

The Wealden Dementia Action Alliance will work to take practical actions to improve the lives of people with dementia, and their families. Dementia awareness workshops will be run across Wealden and action plans established for specific towns and villages.

The Alliance will be working closely with partners to find out what the needs of the carers and the residents with dementia are and find the best ways of meeting them.

Wealden Dementia Action Alliance will also be linking up with Hailsham Pavilion to provide regular dementia friendly film screenings. The first of these is the classic Signing in the Rain at 2:00pm on Friday 20 May with tickets only £3.00 and with no charge for carers.

There are over 685,000 people living with dementia in the UK with the number of cases predicted to rise by 156% by 2051.

If you are interested in attending the launch event, or would like more information about getting involed in the Dementia Action Alliance please email communitydevelopment@wealden.gov.uk or call Kat Jenner on 01892 602757 or Debbie Peters on 01323 443204.
