Thirty three members and guests of the Royal British Legion Pevensey, Westham and Stone Cross branch enjoyed their annual Spring Lunch at the Moorings last Monday (May 12).
Chairman Tom Drummond presented a Legion badge to new member Barbara Backler, and thanked all members for their support of the Legion during the last year.
Local British Legion secretary, Owen Visick, told Bay Life today (May 20) ‘Mr Drummond then spoke about the allied invasion of Sword Beach in the D-Day landings, recalling the courage of piper Bill Millin who marched up and down the beach playing the bagpipes to encourage the troops as they landed, and that the landing that day of 29,000 men was accomplished with only 630 casualties’.
Among the members at the lunch was 92-year-old Ken Hobbs, the only surviving member of this branch who landed on D-Day.
The chairman presented him with a pair of D-Day Anniversary whisky glasses and a bottle of whisky and Mr Hobbs was applauded by all present.
