Charities—Pevfest 2011

Charities supported by Pevfest 2011. People get ready. Give your money by the bucketful.

This year Pevfest is donating all monies raised to five very worthy local causes; St. Wilfred’s Hospice, The Beachy Head Chaplaincy, East Sussex Disability Assosciation- Pevensey and Westham Branch, Pevensey Bay Information Centre and Pevensey Community Action Group.

You can utilise this page to find out a little more information about each of the organisations concerned. Links included with each entry.

St Wilfred’s Hospice—twenty years of caring
Since opening in 1987 we have cared for over 10,000 local people and at any one time we care for around 210 people in our community, offering support to their families and friends.

All our services are provided free of charge, we are not a part of the NHS and rely on public support to raise 85% of our annual running costs of £5.1 million.

St Wilfrid’s Hospice has been in Chichester since 1987 and over the years has grown in size developing the services provided. We are now a 14 bed (with en-suites) inpatient unit with day care facilities, an education unit, a hospice at home service, and nurse specialist based in the community. We rely on the generosity and support of volunteers and donors alike with only 15% of our income coming from the NHS.

The other 85% of our income is generated from fundraising and retail. St Wilfrid’s has 8 shops and a donations centre in a number of towns in the local area. There are over 400 volunteers who help out by generously giving their time both in the hospice and in our shops.

Our excellent members of staff behind the scenes support the wide range of services we deliver and our Board of Trustees ensure we are governed to high standards.

Thank you for reading about us. Do contact us for more information.

1. Dave Howlin’, Dowlin’
I was born in 1959 in Ticehurst East Sussex. By the age of four I was playing tunes on the harmonica and “squeeze box” accordion under the tuition of my Granddad. Just like me now my Granddad was seldom without a “harp” or “gob iron” in his pocket. Throughout my school life I was surrounded by talented musicians, guitars and other musical instruments which fed my deep rooted passion for all things musical.

My taste in music has always been centred on the Blues especially in the delta blues – my inspirations come from the likes of Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, and Eric Clapton and locally Roger Hubbard and Buik6.

I got back into the music scene in my thirties after focusing on work and family. I have formed and was in various bands over the years. I have staged many open mike nights in and around Eastbourne and seen and encouraged lots of local talented musicians from 12 to 83 year old, it’s been amazing & fun ! In 2007 I teamed up with Tim, Jim and Anna (from HowlinBlues) and from a casual idea at a Jamnite, was instrumental in organising one of the Souths most successful music competition for under 25’s. Over 350 entrants, bands, duos, soloists. We had to hire the Wintergarden Theatre, Eastbourne for the Grand Final!!

Playing in the Howlin Blues band I am in my element! I get to play my rhythm guitar, bottleneck slide and of course my blues harp, I also get to sing and write songs for the sets! Lovin’it and HoOWLin forever — Keeping Music Live …
