The shopping centre will soon boast 13 new shops, a 24-hour gym and an improved car park after nearly a year of construction—Marbank, 10 July 2019

Youngsters Benefit From Langney Shopping Centre Build

As Langney Shopping Centre in Eastbourne’s £6.5 million extension takes shape, the building site’s manager Trevor Roffey has highlighted how local young people have benefitted from work experience there.

Trevor, who works for Marbank, said: “As part of the local labour agreement with Eastbourne Borough Council, we are committed to hiring staff from the local area. We have also offered work placement opportunities and two students have already joined us from local schools, with more to come.

“Fifteen-year-old Briley Long-Timmins impressed us so much that after he’d completed his stint, he asked to come back until we’ve finished building the extension. He’s now doing a day a week and helps with sweeping and keeping the site tidy, and any other appropriate jobs as required.”

Trevor also appointed 21-year-old Connor Hesling as an assistant site manager after he completed a two-year on-site management apprenticeship.

Connor, who lives in Langney, describes his role as doing a bit of everything. “Part of my job is to make sure everyone is happy so I might be sorting out problems, or sweeping and cleaning the site. I like getting my hands dirty and meeting new people, but learning is the number one priority and I learn something new every day. I’m having great fun and really enjoying working with the team.”

The shopping centre will soon boast 13 new shops, a 24-hour gym and an improved car park after nearly a year of construction. The work is expected to be finished in August, at which point the retailers will fit out their shop interiors.
