A new project to promote the planting of food within the community, started by local resident Helen Burton, is now bedding down in the Bay.
Talking to us today (September 28), Helen said ‘The Incredible Edible movement is such a great idea, started with no funding, just a few women deciding to make their town more sustainable by planting food everywhere and sharing it with their community’.
She added, ‘I thought it would work really well in our village! Just started publicising it this week, but very positive so far. One of the ladies at the local market said it would be like ‘going back to the old ways’ where we all produce food, share it and know our neighbours. How true!”
The movement which has a savvy networked web profile appears to be developing fast. The online profile for Incredible, Edible is supported by the National Lottery Funded Locality organisation, which is the leading nationwide network of development trusts, community enterprises, settlements and social action centres, As well as communication based forum there is news that links every hub involved to other groups across the country.
One if the founders from Yorkshire is speaking about the project in Eastbourne on Oct 15th.
Edible Eastbourne said “we are pleased to announce our Incredible Evening, a celebration of local food and drink and a chance to hear Special guest speaker Mary Clear talk about the local food revolution.
“Mary is the co founder of Incredible Edible in Todmorden, a local food movement which has quickly taken off all over the world. Mary frequently travels all over the country giving talks about her experience and how to make it work and recently gave a talk to an all party group of MPs at Westminster”.
Local contact Helen explained that the long term goals of the project are to “plant sections of the grass verges in Coast Road with perennial food plants like fruit bushes, strawberries and flowers in Spring next year”
“We need people to contact me if they want to talk about it or get involved!”
