Inspired by the year’s remembering of the start of World War 1 the people of Pevensey, Westham and Stone Cross responded generously to the local branch of the Royal British Legion who made their annual appeal for donations to the Poppy Appeal, writes Owen Visick on behalf of the local branch of the Royal British Legion.
Appeal organiser Pauline Turner and her team handed out collecting boxes to many local organisations, and, despite the bad weather, carried out a house-to-house collection in the three parishes.
And she laid on a Poppy Appeal Dinner, a Quiz Night and several raffles, which with collections from the churches brought in £1335.
The annual Coffee Morning, on a dismal November morning was attended by about 140 people who contributed £1307 to the appeal while enjoying the stalls, raffles, tombola and refreshments. Events Organiser Sandra Tolhurst thanked all who had worked hard to make the event so successful.
When all the collecting boxes had been gathered and their contents counted, the total contributed by the Poppy Appeal was found to be a record £7415, which will greatly help the Royal British Legion in their work of supporting servicemen and their families.
Tom Drummond, Branch Chairman, said he was thrilled with the results of this year’s appeal, and expressed his thanks to all who took part.
