A meeting held in Beachlands last Sunday (July 30), which attracted 50 people produced a set of ideas aimed at the revitalisation of the estate
The foundation of Beachlands is now known as a conception, to have been the work of Thomas Cecil Howitt. He was one of the most eminent provincial architects of the 20th century. Beachlands was to have been a modernist town ‘in its entirety’. Interest in what is happening with the profile of the estate is now reaching beyond Pevensey Bay.
His work and Beachlands is being seen as relevant to the story of the early days of modernist architecture and social planning in the country,
Beachlands in that story is now being perceived as something of a ‘lost chapter’.
Organisers of the event posted the following list of starting points with regard to the revitalisation of Beachlands.
