Fears for future of the library in Pevensey Bay grew over Easter as it became clear that all the books have been removed from the shelves in the building
The useful column on the life and times of Pevensey Bay, in the Eastbourne Herald, written by local resident, Robert Slater, drew attention to the latest chapter in the story of the closure of Pevensey Bay Library last week.
He pointed out that books have now been removed from the premises.
When and how this was done is not clear, but what is certain is that he is right, the removal of the books has taken place.
It hardly suggests that the library is on on-going concern does it? Why remove the books, when they would have to put them back if the service is to be continued in the key building.
So what are we to do?
The County Council has been pro-active in informing the community that there would be news soon about the re-establishment of the service.
It was good to see a news post (March 10) about the situation. Councillor Chris Dowling, East Sussex County Council’s lead member for community services offered the comment on behalf of the Council. He said, “We are sorry for any inconvenience that may be caused by the continued closure of Pevensey Bay Library.
“We are hoping to be able to provide a further update soon once all the necessary checks and assessments have been carried out.”
Are we entitled to ask for a little more information about this assessment and the checks, since the books have all now been removed from the shelves?
We are now into April. The library has been closed since January.
The library is a precious resource to the vibrant community. It is a much loved, much utilised resource and the staff are fabulous.
We have lost the bank, and we nearly lost the post office. It is fundamentally important that we do not lose the library.
Is it time that East Sussex County Council now told us when and how we will see the service re-established for the community that it serves?
