Our small straw poll of local voter intentions shows that people are now equally divided in their opinions as to whether to remain in the European Union or leave—Bay Life, 26 April 2016
The small local straw poll of voter intentions with regard to the EU Referendum shows that people are now divided over whether we should stay in the European Union or vote to come out of the European Union on the Day of the Referendum
Over the course of the campaign, Bay Life is tracking local voter intentions and the (very small) straw poll now shows that the two sides are neck and neck. Up to yesterday (Sunday 24 April), the 140 people voting showed that 70 were intending to vote to remain in the European Union and 70 were intending to vote to come out of the European Union.
In the first four weeks in which we gave people an opportunity to express their intentions, there was a clear majority suggesting that they would vote to leave the European Union. Gradually over the course of the last month, the gap has reduced, with a move towards people suggesting that staying in the European Union would benefit the country.
At first, the poll appeared to run counter to voting intentions across the country as a whole.
The poll now has now almost precisely followed the course of voting intentions in the country. The Telegraph tracker of polls, which appears to give one of the most accurate assessment of voter intentions, according to the polls, is suggesting that an average of the last six polls, as recorded by ‘What UK Think ‘ is indicating that 51% of people will vote to remain in the European Union and 49% will vote to leave the European Union.
Over the course of the last two weeks we have seen Michael Gove and Boris Johnson putting very strong opinions about the advantages of leaving the European Union..
In the last few days we have also had the intervention of US President Barack Obama suggesting that it would be in the interests of the country with regard to our relations with the US to stay in the European Union.
How will people vote in the historic referendum on Thursday 23 June, which will decide the future of the country with regard to our role in Europe?
There is a demonstrable local shift amongst Bay Life readers. Over the course of the last week the majority of people recording their voting intentions have expressed an intention to vote to remain in the European Union.
Bay Life will continue to record votes in our small straw poll up to the day before the Referendum. You can record your voting intentions here on the homepage of Bay Life.
