Communications and planning over roadworks in Pevensey Bay being undertaken by East Susses Highways for the next six weeks, have incensed local people. A medical incident last night (31 January) has become the focus of debate about the agency.
Following the public statement offered by District Councillor Dianne Dear yesterday (31 January) to East Sussex Highways with regard to a medical situation in Beachlands, new questions are being asked.
The statement which outlined the difficulties experienced by an ambulance aiming to reach a lady in Beachlands, with the ambulance unable to get through a road block has been seen widely across the community.
In her statement Dianne Dear, who is also the publisher of Bay Life, said, “the ambulance did not arrive, so she called again and she said the ambulance people eventually arrived to the road block opposite the kiosk on the outskirts of Beachlands. The ambulance could not get through the road block. They parked up and had to run to the address, wasting precious time.
“They said the railway line at Normans Bay was closed overnight and with the road block being by the Kiosk, they had to walk or run”.

A keen observer of Network Rail tweets, particularly those with relevance to the Normans Bay crossing, who was in communication with Network Rail last night, pointed to a tweet which explained, “amended overnight service between Eastbourne and Hastings from Monday 30 January until Friday 3 February: Network rail are carrying out engineering work between Pevensey and Westham to Bexhill from 21:50 until 4:50 each night, closing the line”.
As the observer explained, “rather alarmingly, just found this! It seems that ambulance was right, This means unless the crossing can still be used, we are trapped!”.
Local resident, Chris Tyhurst on seeing what is being said about the incident commented, “The whole job is a disgrace to all the companies and agencies involved, Costain, East Sussex County Council and East Sussex highways they have no consideration for any of the residents or their activities….they just do what they want when they want..”
He added “we now have a critical situation in Beachlands with paramedics having to leave their vehicles and run into the estate to reach people requiring urgent medical care. This situation needs to be addressed at the highest level and it needs to be addressed today. My view is that East Sussex Highways should hang their heads in shame ”
Bay Life is contacting MP, Huw Merriman today as matter of urgency to establish ways in which the situation can be addressed by East Sussex Highways at the highest level.
