Towner presents a once-in-a-lifetime conversation between new Chairman, David Dimbleby, and international tennis legend Martina Navratilova.

The charity fundraising event will take place on Thursday 19 June at Congress Theatre, right next door to Towner’s gallery.

Arguably the best tennis player ever to step on the court, Martina has won 59 Grand Slam crowns, a record nine Wimbledon singles champions, and overcame the odds to become one of the most successful tennis players and an equally successful leader.

The event will also help raise funds for The Elena Baltacha Academy of Tennis , in honour of former British No.1 tennis player Elena Baltacha who died at the age of 30 on Sunday 4 May of liver cancer and Towner, which became an independent Charitable Trust in 2014.

The talk also ties in with the Aegon International, the premiere tennis championship, which takes place in Devonshire Park, just behind Towner, on 14-21 June 2014.

Towner will be celebrating its move to Charitable Trust and its 5th birthday in its new building later this September with a special weekend of events, parties and exhibitions.

This is the first time Towner and Aegon International have collaborated. The creative partnership between art and sport is another high point for the gallery, drawn from the legacy of London 2012 and the Cultural Olympiad.

Emma Morris, Executive Director, said, “We are thrilled to welcome Martina to Eastbourne and who better to explore her fascinating and impressive career than David Dimbleby?

“Summer is one of the busiest times of the year for Towner, where we welcome both tennis fans and art fans into the gallery over two weeks, and this event was a perfect excuse to work more closely with Aegon International and the tennis community.

“I invite you to join us for this special evening to raise funds for Rally for Bally and Towner, and help make a new moment in history, supporting us to continue being an ‘art gallery for the people’.”
