LOCOG have confirmed with Wealden District Council the street level route for the 2012 London Olympic Torch Relay as it makes it’s way through the district on Tuesday 17 July.

A number of local inspirational Torch Bearers will be running with the Torch as it visits Crowborough and Pevensey in ‘Torch Bearer mode’.

Pevensey Parish Council, supported by Wealden District Council, has been successful in securing a change to the initial route. LOCOG, the organising committee, has agreed that the Torch Relay will enter Pevensey on the A259 Eastbourne Road and change to Torch Bearer mode at the sign for Pevensey Bay Village, then continue along Eastbourne Road onto Sea Road, then Wallsend Road, over the railway crossing and will change back into Convoy Mode at the roundabout, leaving the District and making its way towards Bexhill on Sea.

Earlier in the day, the Torch Relay convoy will enter Crowborough on the A26 Eridge Road and will change to Torch Bearer mode at Palesgate Lane before continuing in Torch Bearer mode onto Green Lane, turning right onto Crowborough Hill before turning right into Beeches road, then onto East Beeches road and passing through Beacon Community College (please note the school will not open to the public). The convoy will then continue in Torch Bearer mode onto North Beeches Road, back onto Crowborough Hill heading towards the town. It will travel through the High Street and turn left on to the A26 Beacon Road where it will stay in Torch Bearer mode until Swift Close (opposite the Blue Anchor Pub), where they turn back to convoy mode and make their way towards Lewes before coming back into Wealden and passing through Pevensey later on in the day.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome the London Olympic Torch Relay to our streets in Wealden as it makes its way through Crowborough and Pevensey on Tuesday 17 July”, said Cllr Johanna Howell, Cabinet portfolio-holder for Community at Wealden District Council. “It will be a wonderful event where people in the north of the District will come together and celebrate the achievements of the inspirational Torchbearers carrying the Flame. We will all get to share in the excitement the Olympic Torch Relay”.

Wealden District Council are encouraging as many people as possible to come and see the flame as it travels through Crowborough and Pevensey. More details will be released nearer the time on local events and parking arrangements for the day.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay can be viewed street-by-street (external link). The website gives details and proposed start times for when the Olympic Flame will travel through Crowborough and Pevensey. Residents living in and around Crowborough and Pevensey can find out when it will be travelling along their nearest high street or past their local shop.

The Torchbearers confirmed to carry the Flame through Crowborough and Pevensey today include those that were successful through the public nomination processes run by LOCOG and the Presenting Partners, Coca Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung. LOCOG has endeavoured to slot all community Torchbearers within an hour of their nomination address so family and friends can cheer them on. Each Torchbearer will wear a white and gold uniform which has been designed by Adidas.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG added, “Today we bring the Olympic Torch Relay to life. The Flame symbolises the Olympic spirit and its journey around the UK will bring the excitement of the Games to our streets. Now the people know the route the Olympic Flame will be carried along and the Torchbearers for their community, they can start planning how they might celebrate and make it Wealden’s moment to shine.”

An average of 115 Torchbearers a day will carry the Olympic Flame during its 8,000 mile journey around the UK before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the official start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

LOCOG has worked closely with representatives from a number of sectors in each Nation and Region of the UK to devise the route and is taking the Olympic Flame to within ten miles of over 95% of the population.

Schools across the UK can now access free learning resources linked to the Olympic Torch Relay through Get Set (external link), the official London 2012 education programme. The activities are designed to help schools and colleges make the most of the Relay by lining the route, and cheering on their local Torchbearers. Resources include ideas for making Flame hats and shakers to welcome the Flame, an assembly presentation to get the school behind a Torchbearer and a film showing one Get Set network school’s preparations for the Relay.
