Bay Life event of the week, Battle Brass Band Concert: Sunday 11 May, 2:30pm, St. Nicolas Church Pevensey.

Battle Town Band is a friendly, local brass band based in Battle, East Sussex.

“The band has a large and varied repertoire ranging from traditional brass band music to modern arrangements, and our concerts regularly feature many of our talented soloists”.

They perform throughout the year at venues throughout the South East, (including Eastbourne Bandstand, Deal Bandstand and Hever Castle, to name but a few).

Last year they had a busy summer season with two very successful 1812 Fireworks Concerts on Eastbourne Bandstand, the last one on 4th September 2013 bringing in possibly the biggest audience there.

As the they point out, ‘not as big as the 1,000 plus crowd that cheered us on at the Battle of Hastings Proms in Alexandra Park on 4th July though!!!!!’

The original band, with a tradition dating back well into the 19th Century, dissolved in 1939.

The current band reformed in 1975, based around students from a brass evening class run by then director Angela Holland. Since then the band has grown in number and in strength and endeavours to promote and encourage the playing of brass instruments in Battle and the surrounding area.

Since 2004 the band has competed annually in the London & Southern Counties Region of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. In 2009 they won the 4th Section with their performance of Frank Hughes’ ‘The Talisman’, and qualified to compete in the National Finals in Harrogate, where they came 12th out of 19 bands playing Bruce Fraser’s ‘Alta Vista’.

In March 2010 at the National Finals in Harrogate they came seventh out of twenty-one bands playing Alan Fernie’s ‘Royal Mile Suite’!!

Tickets to see the band are available for £10.00, at the door, refreshments are available.

As Owen Visick, churchwarden at St. Nicolas Church tells us, they are the best brass band in the South-East!!!!
