Twixt Two Worlds, Jarman Awards,
Brighton Photo Biennial, CINECITY & more

Towner kicks off its Autumn 2014 season with new exhibition Twixt Two Worlds, a month-long Jarman Award film display and an exciting experimental multi art form programme including film, music, artist talks, literature, and more.

Twixt Two Worlds opens on Saturday 11 Oct and will focus on early photography, cinema, and contemporary visual arts, exploring double exposure and the supernatural. It will include John and William Barnes’ collection of early cinema apparatus and ephemera as well as contemporary art works by Douglas GordonSaskia Olde Wolbers and Jane & Louise Wilson.

The exhibition is accompanied by exclusive artist talks from Jane & Louise Wilson in conversation with Mark Waugh (8 Nov) on their 1993 work Hypnotic Suggestion 505Susan Hiller (6 Dec) on her ground-breaking art practice and 2007 work The Fight, and Curator Fellow Gaia Tedone (18 Nov). The show is on until 4 Jan.

Towner is delighted to host 2014 Jarman Award Touring Programme (11 Oct-2 Nov) which presents film works by the 10 artists shortlisted for this year’s award: John Akomfrah, Sebastian Buerkner, Laura Buckley, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd, Steven Claydon, Redmond Entwistle, Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, Ursula Mayer, Rachel Reupke and Stephen Sutcliffe.

Filmmaker John Akomfrah will be giving a special talk (2 Nov) about his film Peripeteia, which is based on 16th century drawings by Albrecht Durer, one of the earliest Western representations of black people.

Other events include: evening of ambient music, film and visuals from Anti-Ghost Moon Ray Collective (31 Oct), all day Alfred Hitchcock film screenings (9 Nov), experimental film to mark the centenary of William Burroughs birth from CINECITY (15 Nov), and a Day of the Dead inspired art, literature and DJ party Ghost Worlds by Latin Voices Live! (28 Nov).

To accompany new Collection Display Land and Sea, which includes new acquisitions by Matthew MillerUriel Orlow and Simon Roberts we will have artist talks from Simon Roberts (28 Oct), Uriel Orlow (29 Nov) and Curators talk from Sara Cooper (11 Dec).

Towner’s commitment to working with the local community will see Mouth and Foot Painting Artists Exhibition (21-26 Oct), an exhibition and workshops inspired by a mental health and art project Frames of Mind (2-14 Dec).

We are also delighted to host two special writing workshops: visual art inspired creative writing workshop with Wendy Ann Greenhalgh (25 Oct) from New Writing South and a poetry workshop and performance from Dean Atta and East Sussex Library & Information Service in honour of Black History Month (25 Oct).

Twixt Two Worlds (11 Oct-4 Jan) is presented in association with Brighton Photo Biennial (BPB14) and curated by Gaia Tedone, Curatorial Fellow (South), as part of a yearlong fellowship hosted by the Royal Pavilion & Museums, Brighton & Hove in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Society and Whitechapel Gallery in London. BPB14 runs 4 October – 2 November 2014.

Artist talks Jane & Louise in conversation with Mark Waugh, Twixt Two Worlds Curator Gaia Tedone Walk & Talk and Uriel Orlow in Conversation are part of CAS Talks supported by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation, a year-long programme of talks by contemporary artists that take place in the Contemporary Art Society’s Member Museums across the UK. The talks happen as a work by the artist enters the museum collection and are designed to introduce artists to new audiences. Founded in 1910, Contemporary ARt Society exists to encourage an appreciation and understanding of contemporary art and to donate works to museums and public galleries across the UK.
