ST MARY’S CHURCH WESTHAM : KEEP THE BELLS RINGING : DOWNLOAD AND SHARE POSTER
The bells of St. Mary’s Westham need urgent refurbishment and parishioners and community stakeholders have asked local people for help
St Mary’s Church, which stands to the west of Pevensey Castle dates from the late 11th century, is designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building.
David Wragg, Church Magazine editor, describes the value of the church to the community “St Mary’s has been the chief landmark of the village since the 11th century. At the Roman West Gate of Pevensey Castle, it stands sentinel over field and marsh. The original Norman Church was enlarged in the 14th/15th century and the massive west tower was built. This building with its notable history still provides a place of worship and fellowship from which we proclaim God’s love through the crucified, risen and living Jesus Christ”.
The church has to raise a further £15,000 to renew the bell frame and to renovate six bells. The church says ‘please help us to keep ringing in Westham by making a donation., sponsoring the bell frame at £5:00 an inch’.

Friday 7 November to Sunday 9 November 2014
10:00am—4:00pm in St. Mary’s Church, Westham
Donations and sponsorship money can be left at Vines Flowers, Westham Post Office, Spencer’s Hairdressers, the Fish and Chip shop, the Heron, Regal Hairdressers or in the chest at the back of the church (emptied daily). ‘If you are a taxpayer please use the gift aid envelope that we can provide’.
The event promises to be a family occasion with a raffle, exhibitions, an opportunity to decorate a bell and learn about the village history during World War One. In addition there will be an opportunity to dress up in 1914 costumes and learn more about bellringing.
